Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer and Encarna Sanchez, hairdresser. She was an
obsessive performer as a child and would reenact TV commercials to keep the
family entertained. However, she chose to focus her attention on dancing. After
pursuing classical ballet for 9 years in Spain's National Conservatory, she
continued her education under a number of prominent dancers. She discovered her
true passion at the age of 15, after she defeated over 300 other girls at an
audition at an agency for talents. The resultant contract secured her numerous
roles on Spanish TV shows and music videos. This in turn opened the door to an
acting career on the big screen. Cruz made her debut film in 1993's The Greek
Labyrinth (The Greek Labyrinth). She then briefly was in Framed (1992), a
Timothy Dalton thriller. Her next film was the Oscar-winning Belle Epoque
(1992), in which she played one of four sisters fighting to win the heart of a
handsome deserter from the army. It also won numerous Goyas that are the
Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards. Cruz became a renowned Spanish
actress thanks to her average of three to four films per year, which was a
growing list. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work
with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket
to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the
thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain
that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her luck changed when
she received the Best Actress Goya for the movie-industry comedy La Nina De Tus
Ojos (1998). After a few more tries at film in the English language her first
international hit was in Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999) where she
portrayed an unchaste but well-meaning nun. Cruz became in high demand in both
the Atlantic and the west coast, since the film received numerous awards and
