Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. Her aunt worked in the evening shift as nurse so she could follow her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of the power of art as an activist vehicle. DuVernay learned to be socially aware through her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the trash from one of the jury. As a result of her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
